Swedavia’s traffic statistics for May 2026: Air travel continues to increase despite the current global situation

2026-06-03, kl. 10:22

The demand for air travel continued to strengthen via Swedavia’s ten airports in May. In total more than 3,1 million travelers flew through Swedavia´s airports during the month. That was an increase by three percent compared to May 2025. International travel increased by roughly three percent and domestic travel by two percent.

All airports showed increase in total, although the increase varied locally between the airports. The positive development in May was driven by continued demand for primarily international air travel. International air travel is still to some extent influenced by the current global situation, and above all the situation in the Middle East.

Stockholm Arlanda Airport, Sweden’s largest airport, had more than 2,2 million passengers in May. That is an increase of two percent compared to May last year. International travel increased by just under three percent to nearly 1.9 million passengers, while domestic travel decreased by two percent to about 370 000 passengers.

Göteborg Landvetter Airport handled around 500 000 passengers in May, representing an increase of nearly four percent compared to the same month 2025. International travel increased by nearly six percent to 455 000 passengers, while domestic travel decreased by ten percent to 47 000 passengers.

Swedavia’s remaining eight airports all showed a positive trend in May, although with local variations. Visby Airport, followed by Malmö Airport, were two of the three airports which showed the strongest increase – 26 respectively 11 percent compared to the same month last year.

The development in May at Visby Airport was driven by increased domestic travel, while the development at Malmö Airport was driven by increased international travel.

Bromma Stockholm Airport had a total of just over 12 000 passengers in May, corresponding to five percent of pre-pandemic levels in 2019.
