Stockholm Arlanda Airport – An airport ready for the future

Stockholm Arlanda Airport connects all of Sweden together and is where Sweden meets the world. As Sweden’s most important transport hub, the airport must provide efficient and inspiring travel experiences, be a leading meeting place, and set an international example in terms of sustainability.

Continuous development to meet future needs

In order to meet the needs of both today and tomorrow, from passengers, airlines and all the other operators at the airport, several major development projects have been carried out at Arlanda in recent years.

Among these, Terminal 5 has been given a new security control and an expanded Marketplace, which has improved the range of products and services on offer and enhanced the overall impression of the airport. A new connecting passageway between Terminal 4, which previously only handled domestic traffic, and Terminal 5, creates a joint terminal for both domestic and international passengers.

Development plan for 2040

The development of the airport does not stop there. In its development plan for Arlanda, Swedavia describes how the airport will be developed up to around 2040. Once implemented, the development plan will create the conditions for an operationally efficient airport with the right capacity and a focus on the passenger experience. The plan will also enable aviation to transition to fossil-free transport.

Planning for the future of Arlanda needs to take place well in advance and have a long-term perspective to provide the best possible conditions for meeting future needs. Funding is not yet allocated for the investments and measures described below, and decisions will be made on a gradual and commercial basis as developments progress.

The first step in implementing the development plan is to complete the expansion of Terminal 5, and investments in terminal development will therefore primarily be focused there until 2040.

Terminal 5 the focus for future travel

The plans for Terminal 5 include a new pier with 14 additional gates and a modern new baggage facility with a dynamic baggage hotel. More effective border control for both departing and arriving non-Schengen passengers and a new transfer centre with a transfer security control are planned in connection with the new pier. This will facilitate smoother flows for both transfer passengers and passengers with their final destination in the Stockholm area.

The check-in hall requires slight expansion, utilising adjacent areas. This enables efficient pedestrian flows between Sky City and the security control and allows for the expansion of queuing areas at check-in counters and check-in kiosks to reduce congestion.

A growing airport city

Work is also under way to establish modern and efficient access to the terminals, and a new bus terminal is planned adjacent to a new main entrance to Terminal 5.

New meeting places, hotels and office properties are emerging adjacent to the terminals in the airport city.

Arlanda is the hub of a growing regional core, central to the future growth potential of the entire Mälardalen region. In addition to developing the airport area itself, ground transport to and from the airport also needs to be improved. A transport plan has been drawn up that provides an overview of the status of the transport system and its development needs up to around 2050.
